The Department of Statistics was created in academic year 1979-1980, Rajah Serfoji Government College, Thanjavur at Bharathidasan University. The Department of Statistics was established with B.Sc. Statistics course in June, 1979 and has been successfully running for 44 years. The objective of the course is to produce dynamic and potential Statisticians and inculcate moral, social and ethical values to become good Indian citizens. The curriculum includes practical applications of Statistics in various fields. To train students in development and applications of Statistical techniques for analyzing data arising in the scientific investigation of problems in various disciplines. It also provides first hand practical experience in handling modern statistical software in the analysis of such data. In the present scenario, it is rather impossible, even to think of any field which does not employ modern statistical tools to arrive at rational conclusions from research studies and a statistician is always an indispensable part of any research team carrying out any research investigation.

Department of Statistics is conducted statistics elective courses such as Economics, Mathematics, Commerce and Business Administration and also conducted by Non Major Electives in the departments are Biochemistry and Bio-Technology.

A post-graduate programme, M.Sc., Statistics was started in the academic year 2012-2013, dated on 18.08.2012. The department is to produce committed, competent, efficient and professionally capable under graduate and post graduates in the fields of statistics. The department extends its support to the post-graduate students of other disciplines through offering Core, Elective and Skill Enhancement Courses to them under Choice Based Credit System.

The department is well equipped with a furnished computer laboratory with required software for practical training to the students. The Department Library is housed with nearly 1639 books. Multimedia LCD Projector facilities are available in the department. The staff members are effectively utilizing ICT tools to prepare teaching and learning materials for the all the subjects of UG, PG Programmes.

| Best Practices :

Students pursuing M.Sc Statistics course have to do a mandatory project work in their fourth semester as part of their course work. This is intended to expose students to problems associated with statistical data analysis. As additional learning, students are encouraged to work on SPSS and R-statistical software.   • An MoU has signed with Adaikalamatha Arts and Science College. As per this MoU, we will provide training in Statistical Analysis to their students. More than one Minor projects, financed by UGC, were carried out by our staff Members.

The members of faculty have proved their mettle demonstrating quality teaching and fetching out research publications in the Journals of International Repute. The faculties in the department have many research publication to their credits and have publications in the journals of International / National repute, which include Science Citation Index (SCI) journals, such as Journal of Quality Technology, Journal of Applied Statistics, Journal of Testing and Evaluation, Communications in Statistics, and the journals indexed by Zentralblatt and Mathematical Reviews.

Since its inception, with the continued efforts of faculty members, the department has produced many Doctoral and M.Phil., degrees besides Post Graduates. Research scholars of this department received prestigious national level fellowships from UGC - CSIR after qualifying through NET and INSPIRE fellowship from DST to pursue the research programmes. The department extends its support to the post-graduate students of other disciplines offering elective and supportive courses under Choice Based Credit System.

The members of faculty are well associated with Professional and Academic Bodies in Statistics at the International / National level and also have represented in the Administrative and academic Bodies of this University like Syndicate, Senate, Standing Committee on Academic Affairs and Board of Studies etc., and held administrative positions. They are actively engaged in interaction with the academics of various Institutions / Universities across India to enrich their skills and knowledge in statistics education as a whole.

The department has a well established Statistical Computing Laboratory with 56 terminals which will enable the students to work independently of each other. The computer system supports the standard statistical software’s SPSS,STATA,SYSTAT and R Language The students will have ample opportunities to get themselves fully trained in the use of these software which will guarantee them immediate placement after graduation. The salient features of the department are the practical training both manual and computer based system given by way of conducting Public Opinion and Socio-economic Surveys with NSSO.
